A WORD FROM Paul & Bruce

A performance is always a journey we experience together with you. We sense your anticipation. We feed from your excitement. We rise with your applause.

Whether performing on stage or cheering from the stalls, those who step inside our concert halls rarely emerge the same people as those who entered. This is the magic of the alchemy created between us. As we embark on a new season, and indeed a new era for the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, we invite you to be engaged, be uplifted, be moved and be renewed, with us. Our 2024 season continues our bold mission to excite, to honour, to reinvent and to reignite the energy of early music with a creative trajectory that takes us to the far edges of the galaxy, to the limits of the imagination, to collective memories stitched into our history and culture, to the corners of the human experience, to the chambers of the heart. Traversing music from ancient to modern — from the uplifting force of harmonious voices, to a single soprano expertly suspending us on the edge of our seats; from the full orchestra, to next-generation soloists taking centre-stage; from narrative based storytelling, to pure sensuality words can barely define — we bring it all to you in 2024.

For the passionate loyalists who continue to join us on our journey, you stimulate us. You energise us. Your desire to be inspired is infectious, and we endeavour to continue breaking boundaries and forging our path forward, together with you. To our private, corporate and Government donors and partners, you challenge us to keep evolving. For placing your enduring trust, faith and belief in us, and fuelling our quest to conquer the limits of creative re-interpretation, we thank you. For those stepping on board to join us for the first time, it is our great privilege to reward your curiosity and test your preconceptions, assumptions and beliefs. Every guest brings their own energy to the experience, and we exist for you as much as for our seasoned fans. We welcome you to bravely traverse new dimensions, together. And so begins our journey…

A BIT ABOUT US

The Brandenburg

Live, vulnerable and raw, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra is unapologetic in our mission to push the limits of experience in the celebration of past and present-day human creativity.

We’re here to challenge ideas and reinterpret the icons of classical music for the 21 st century, creating new audiences to ensure early music lives on in the hearts and minds of new generations. Reigniting early music from the 16 th , 17 th and 18 th century on rare instruments of the period, that is where our faith for tradition begins and ends. Loved for our personality, warmth and spirit, Australia’s flagship period orchestra is for the bold explorers who are unsatisfied having their expectations met with the tropes of pomp and predictability. We’re for the wanderers who courageously thirst for something new; for the seekers and searchers who relish in the spirit of international collaboration for which we are known, which continues to spread deep throughout the world, uncovering the freshest talent and genre-bending virtuosos from all corners of the globe. And over 30 years on, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra story continues to evolve as our performances and recordings make a mark on ARIA awards, Hollywood movie scores, international collaborations, festivals, sell-out concert halls in capital cities, and intimate performances in regional communities. And today our impact is being felt abroad as we continue growing an active global following through Brandenburg One, our ever-expanding digital streaming library of performances, interviews, and more. Our connection to community continues to evolve, with exciting collaborations with First Nations

artists and creators in the early stages of development. Beyond flawless professionalism and critical acclaim as the leading orchestra in our field, it’s the personalities of the orchestra through which we shine. As the nation’s veritable incubator of Baroque talent, our legacy continues through our alumni: a growing ecosystem of next-generation Brandenburg artists who go on to spark countless early music ensembles around Australia, and join international acts, further expanding the reach and impact of our cherished genre. As much as our performances described ‘like stepping back in time, as the sounds of period instruments resurrect Baroque and classical works with reverence and authority,’ as proclaimed by The Australian, we’re equally about pushing forward with relevance and creativity. Through genre-defying productions collaborating with contemporary artisans, set designers, authors, directors, projectionists and creative agencies, we treat even the most seasoned audience members to experience the iconic scores of our common cultural fabric woven into a bold new tapestry: always fresh; frequently unexpected; forever exciting. We are the Brandenburg. And our story, which began with our debut performance at The Opera House in 1990, is still unfolding. We invite you to be part of it.

SERIES 01 FEB / MAR

Notre-Dame

Brandenburg Choir

A story of ritual, revolution and resurrection conceptualised by Paul Dyer and turned into an award-winning script by Alana Valentine.

It only took one tiny ember to spark the destruction of 800 years of history when Notre-Dame de Paris was partially consumed by fire in April 2019, igniting collective grief for the iconic eras, moments, and characters embodied in her halls. While fire has the power to destroy, it also cleanses and purifies. The ashes create a canvas and illuminate the path forward, to bravely begin anew. Battered, dilapidated and restored. Witness to both revolution and miracles, the cathedral on the Île de la Cité has been an epicentre of musical innovation and choral transcendence since the first stone was laid, and its enduring spirit deserves to be celebrated. Spirited, soulful and unapologetically French, Notre-Dame commemorates eight centuries of exquisite music performed within Notre-Dame de Paris. It is a story told in a moving theatrical experience of spoken word penned by award-winning playwright and director Alana Valentine, spurring from the mind of Artistic Director Paul Dyer, and brought to life by orchestral and choral music from the cathedral’s rich history. Notre-Dame goes beyond a story of grief and loss. Revel in an opportunity to raise our hearts together as we dig through the ashes of memories, affirming hope in the certain resurrection of the cathedral, and indeed the human spirit, to enter a brave new era.

Handel’s House

Yukie Sato (Japan)

Step inside and embrace the beauty of Handel’s finest arias as soprano Yukie Sato makes her Australian debut.

From the moment Yukie Sato enters Handel’s House , you’ll feel the force of her gravity. It might be the house that Handel built, but it is this glowing soprano who makes it her own. The purity of her voice is set to deliver a Handelian experience with uncompromising clarity, beckoning her audiences to surrender to the siren as she holds us in the palm of her hand, cracks open our hearts, and lovingly reassembles them piece by piece. Making her highly anticipated Australian debut, Japan’s Yukie Sato is the songbird who refuses to be defined or caged. Be transfixed as the international soprano takes flight through Handel’s most cherished arias. Revel in the Japanese-born, Swiss-educated diva’s technical and innate musicality and natural charisma perfectly befitting of Handel’s distinctly Germanic approach to Italian style. A vocal icon that cannot be dulled, prepare for Sato to weave a vivid tapestry that will engulf and envelope you entirely. That is her power, wielded like a burning sword. In a rare opportunity to experience the soprano outside of Japan, it’s your choice to shy from her brightness or surrender to her flame as she graces us for this brief but epic moment in time, and then she is gone. Catch her while you can!
